Awakening The Elder Within:
Grandmothers Visiting the Heartland

April 25–27, 2014
Chicago, IL

Join us for a historic series of events with esteemed elders Grandmother Flordemayo (Maya), Grandmother Mona Polacca (Havasupai/Hopi), and Grandmother Rita Long Visitor Holy Dance (Oglala Lakota), members of the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers.

Each Grandmother, as sacred lineage keeper, will be sharing her knowledge by bringing the heart of the mother into the city of Chicago. The overall intention of this visit is to support their prayer for global peace and sacred activism, and to provide more people, especially those in youth-oriented urban settings with the opportunity to experience, value and appreciate the importance of intergenerational wisdom and the power of the feminine.

All proceeds and support benefit the 13th Gathering of The International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers in South Dakota, hosted by Grandmother Rita Long Visitor Holy Dance.

An Evening Celebrating the Power of Ancestry with Esteemed Grandmother Elders: Rita Long Visitor Holy Dance, Mona Polacca and Flordemayo

UPDATE: We are thrilled to share the news that our pre-film screening reception will have delicious international light fare supplied by two extraordinary "celebrity" chefs: Chef Carlos Gaytan of Mexique and Chef Morimoto of Japonais so make sure to arrive at 5:30 pm at the exquisite Instituto Cervantes.

The evening will begin with an informal gathering among new and remembered kindred spirits, followed by a screening of the powerful documentary "For the Next 7 Generations" by Carole Hart, which takes us into the lives of each Grandmother and how they came to learn about each other's lineage and culture.

After the film, the Grandmothers will share their extraordinary ten-year journey of walking in united intention on behalf of the global vision for the healing of our beloved planet and humanity. It will be a unique opportunity to be in the company of three lineage holders who carry the unbroken ancestral teachings at these critical crossroads in our turbulent world. They will each share comments and answer questions about what it has meant to serve this sacred assignment and become a sisterhood of love as the completion of the Council's original mission comes close to fruition.

A Grandmothers wisdom teaching circle on the Importance of Honoring our Stories

Join us as the Grandmothers speak to the importance of claiming your life as a conscious journey — a story that begins 7 generations before this moment and impacts generations to come. As we step outside of linear time with prayer, grace and humor, allow the deep understanding of these wisdom keepers to attune and align your heart. As we come to a place of awakening and remembrance of our inheritance as individuals, as part of a community and a collective earth and universal story, we can become co-creators of a new chapter. We can learn from each other by sharing our journey and become more balanced and loving people who honor where we have been and where we choose to go.

UPDATE: Please be respectful that no outside food or drinks are allowed in the program meeting rooms. Lunch will be on your own and there is no place to eat on premises but we will have a list of nearby places to grab a quick bite during the 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm lunch break. If you would like to eat lunch at Kendall college's dining room, reservations are required.

How Faith, Trust and Surrender Can Prove to be Powerful Change Agents for our Turbulent Times

Holding a position of Eldership requires the ability to serve the collective on many levels. Whether it is one person, a crop, a tree or a nation, a Grandmother wisdom keeper knows how to commune with the seen and unseen realms and can use her abilities in a deep and expansive way to offer guidance in situations that have no easy solutions.

Each Grandmother carries her own ancient lineage that has endured in spite of profound suffering and mistreatment. One of the reasons is this unbroken connection to the web of life woven by the original Grandmothers who walk by their side at all times. The Grandmothers offer us this sacred understanding so that we might develop approaches for healing, problem solving and reconciliation in our own lives, whether with our families, schools, work and or urban environments.

Spend a rare day of exploration with three Grandmother elders who describe themselves as women of prayer, vision and purpose. Each Grandmother has her own visions and a sacred mission she has dedicated her life to bringing forth. These women, though rich in ancestry, were born into situations of great challenge with very little resources. Yet today they are traveling the world in the name of peace, healing and love.

Together we will create a sacred circle devoted to the activation of self trust and remembrance that each woman has something important and unique within her soul that is meant to be shared with the world. Each Grandmother will open her medicine in support of this initiation in service to this new era on the planet when women are asked to take the staff of leadership for a greater humanity.

UPDATE: We will be meeting at a private photography studio and there will be chairs as well as room to sit on the floor. Those interested in sitting on the floor, please bring a back jack or yoga mat for your comfort. We will be providing a delicious lunch enhanced by generous donations from Snarf's, DAVIDsTEA and heart-shaped Chicago Butter Cookies to add to our joy as we celebrate this rare and intimate time together. There is a lovely park across from the studio where we can eat and walk during our lunch break, if the weather permits.

The Grandmother Store will be open during lunch and for 45 minutes after the end of the workshop from 4:00 - 4:45 PM.

You will not want to miss this intimate day of ceremonial wonder with the Grandmothers!

All audio, video and photographs are strictly prohibited do to the sensitive nature of the programs.

The Grandmothers Mission Statement

We, The International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, represent a global alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth, all Her inhabitants, all the children, and for the next seven generations to come. We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth and the destruction of indigenous ways of life. We believe the teachings of our ancestors will light our way through an uncertain future. We look to further our vision through the realization of projects that protect our diverse cultures: lands, medicines, language and ceremonial ways of prayer and through projects that education and nurture our children.

Thank You!

Our goal is to cover all of the visit expenses so that all of the ticket sales can go directly in support of the Grandmothers Fall Gathering. We have received generous donations that have gratefully covered honorariums, flights, lodging, venue rentals however we still need support to assist with other costs such as reception refreshments, meals for teacher and staff, printing, web costs and other associated supplies and crew. If you are interested in offering a cash donation please click here to email. All donations are tax deductible.

Please note: While it can be customary to offer a gift to an elder, when the Grandmothers visit for teaching, they request that any gifts be placed in a general basket for them or their communities. Even though this will be an intimate setting for this visit, there will not be opportunities to offer individual gifts or have in depth one-on-one conversations with the Grandmothers. We are sharing this so everyone understands that they need to preserve their energy for the collective teaching work during this time with them. We appreciate your understanding and know you will show them that respect and kindness.

Letter from Susan

Dear friends,

I have had the blessed, mysterious good fortune of working for several years with Grandmother Flordemayo, a Mayan priestess and universal healer who currently resides in New Mexico, and have hosted her once before in Chicago, in the fall of 2012.

I’m touched and honored to have the blessing of learning and growth with Grandmother Flodemayo as a teacher, not only via the wisdom of her lineage and personal teachings but also by witnessing how she walks her talk as an empowered woman and humble steward of the earth and universe. ...
